Hosting an Online Discussion

While nothing takes the place of a dynamic class discussion in a traditional, face-to-face setting, online discussions certainly have their place in a 21st Century education.

Discussion contributions can be assigned as homework, or teachers may occasionally wish to use classtime for students to share their thoughts in a digital forum.  Many teachers report that online discussions "level the playing field" because all students are required to participate, even those who might hang back in a face-to-face setting. Teachers also observe that student contributions are sometimes richer in an online setting because participants can take time to craft comments.
